Celine is Confirmed

Well, Celine is officially confirmed.  Whew!  Sunday September 16, 2012 Celine along with Augustas "Gus" Buss, and Cody Heitmann were confirmed at Lake City Lutheran Church in Lake City, SD.  The last class confirmed there is believed to be in the 60's.  The three families filled the church with family members and friends.  It was a beautiful day.  Afterwards we came back to the house to share a meal and visit.  Celine was fortunate to have her sponsors Auntie Kristi and Uncle Justin, Grandparents Kathy, Vince and Vickie, and GREAT GRANDMA Henrichsen!  Along with family friends who have been there since Celine was born and baptized, the Andersons and Brewsters.  Thanks to all of them for sharing her special day with her.  We are very blessed and proud parents.  God Bless you all.

National Museum of the American Indian Located in Washington D.C.

Carrie's Summer Camp in D.C.
I am pleased to be a part of the Oceti Sakowin Project this summer.  I am part of a group of educators working on writing Social Studies curriculum for grades K-12 as a part of the SD Office of Indian Education.   We are writing the history through the Native American perspective.  This project was started 4 years ago.  This week we are in D.C. working at the Smithsonian and using their valuable resources to help complete our project.  Today we actually traveled to the Cultural Resource Center where they house thousands of items representing tribes from all around the country.  It was fascinating to say the least.  Here are a few photos of what I saw and learned about today.

She's here!

Congratulations!  It's a Girl!  Brenda and Gene welcomed a Baby Girl Monday February 27th around 5:30 pm California time.  Both momma and baby are doing well.  She weighed in at 5lbs 13 ounces and is 17 1/2 inches long.  She is healthy, has a beautiful color, and a lot of dark hair. All we need is a name for this little angel.  Cogratulations to Brenda and Gene!  WE can't wait to meet her.

A North Dakota Kind of Day

Celine and I traveled up to Wahpeton, ND to watch the Heath girls skate in competition.  They have been faithfully taking skating lessons and belong to the Watertown Skate Club for the past 3 years. They practice twice a week and travel the tri-state to skate in competitions.  It was exciting to see how graceful and atheletic both girls were on skates.  They both placed first in a variety of performances. Congratulations girls!
We then traveled up to Fargo to have a girls day.  We had our fingers and toes prettied up, went out to eat, shopped, and took in a movie.  It was a fun filled day.

Fun Photos of Grandma Wilde

Grandma as a young woman.

I have to find out if this is Grandma and Aunt Rhonda or mom.

The Family

Grandma and her siblings last summer in Portland Oregon.  She was the oldest!

Rest In Peace Grandma Wilde

Our Sweet Grandma Wilde passed away unexpectedly Friday, February 3rd of a stroke. We celebrated her 86 years of life at her prayer service and funeral held February 7th and 8th respectfully. She was remembered fondly by many and we all got a much needed chuckle out of a remark made by a friend of hers. He said, "I have only one word to describe Roberta....WOW!" He also remarked how she was one of the "wee people". :) Here are a few of my favorite things about Grandma Wilde; Patience, she had a lot of it. She was an artist. When I was younger she had her own ceramic shop in their basement. I loved painting down there. She painted numerous paintings. I have the painting of a one room school house she gave me years ago. Her hands were small but they were always busy. She was a prayerful lady who was deeply devoted to her family and church. She made delicious salsa with celery, the best homemade chex mix and peanut brittle at Christmas time. I think she invented frozen yogurt and had to be one of the first to make "walking" cool. She as an avid golfer with 3 holes in one to her name! She loved to fish and when we went camping we had the most fantastic fish frys. She holds a very special place in my heart and I am so grateful that Celine and Monte had her as a part of their lives. I love you Grandma. I will remember all the good times we had. Thanks for the memories. Carrie

Celine and Gymnastics

Celine finished her first year in gymnastics last night.  She pleasantly surprised us when she told us she was going out for gymnastics after volleyball season was over.  I have a new respect for the sport.  We are so proud of her and the improvment she showed throughout the season considering she has not had any training prior to this.  It takes a lot of guts to get out there and perform individually.  If they fall off the beam or bars they get right back on and finish their routine.
 Way to go Celine!

Martin Joseph was born on March 17, 1919 in Belcourt, ND the son of Peter and Virginia (Wilkie) Azure. In 1926, the family moved to Devils Lake where Chib attended Washington Elementary School. In 1931, he attended a grade school in Rapid City, SD that closed in 1933 so he completed his grade school education at Sioux San Central School also in Rapid City. From 1936 to 1940 he attended Flandreau Vocational School and graduated as a master mason and journeyman carpenter. The government buses would pick the students up in the fall but parents were responsible to pick their children up when school ended in the spring while Martin was in school in Flandreau. Chib’s parents would pick him up as they travelled, North Dakota, South Dakota and eastern Montana capturing and breeding wild horses that were sold as they traveled. All transportation was horse driven, they lived in Tipis and as Chib reported, it was a double Tipi in the cold weather. Chib’s masonry career began in 1946 and he retired in 1972, building many brick landmarks throughout North Dakota and the United States. However, Chib continued to lay brick well into his 80’s.
Chib was drafted into the United States Army on June 25, 1941. During this time he was a machine gunner, assigned to the ATS Transport Service, American Star and arrived in Honolulu, Hawaii on Christmas Day, 1941 after volunteering for service there after the Pearl Harbor Invasion. He held the ranks of Private First Class, Gun Commander-coast artillery, Corporal and Sergeant for the Military Police. Decorations and citations include: American Campaign Medal, American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in December of 1945, at Camp Beale, California with the rank of Sergeant, serving with the 9206th Technical Service Unit. After his discharge he worked as a truck driver to earn enough money to purchase the 1946 Harley Davidson motorcycle which he rode back to Devils Lake.
In 1946, Martin learned to fly airplanes using the GI bill. His instructor’s at the time were Dan Wakefield Sr. and Bob Strawhaker. He received his pilot license and continued to hold it until his death. Chib tells the story of the time he hunted fox by airplane with Wayne Riggin. Between the two of them they bagged 275 fox. Chib and Wayne presented their kill to the county auditor to collect $3.00 bounty on each pelt.
On November 4, 1948 he married Laura Rondeau in Devils Lake where they lived, worked and raised their children. In the summer, Chib worked as a mason throughout North Dakota and in the winter month’s he worked as a mechanic at Bert’s Deep Rock. In 1974, Chib and Laura moved to Toppenish, Washington where Chib worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs until 1980 when he transferred to Indian Health Service, Fort Yates, North Dakota until his retirement in 1982 as a Facilities Engineer. Chib and Laura moved back to Devils Lake at that time.
Chib was a proud member of the Turtle Mountain Chippewa Tribe. He was inducted into the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craft Workers in 1948. He was an Elks Lodge member, member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #756 since 1942, honorary 3rd degree Knights of Columbus member at Toppenish and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Chib’s hobbies were many. He loved the outdoors and was very athletic so enjoyed many activities including hunting, snow skiing and gardening. He was an avid stock car racer and frequently built his own cars. Chib loved to putz in his garage.
A loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, father-in-law and friend-that was Chib. His memory will live on through his children and grandchildren and great grandchildren. The stories he shared with the citizens of Devils Lake, will be echoing through the halls of the many buildings he visited for many years to come.
Chib is survived by his wife Laura of 63 years; his daughters Lynette Azure of Devils Lake, LeAnn (Neil) Christianson of Billings, Montana and Simone (Therese Wos) Azure of Chicago, Illinois; sons Scott Azure of Toppenish, Tim (Carrie) Azure of Sisseton, SD, Pete (Marilyn) Azure of Grand Forks and Lane (Shannon) Azure of Devils Lake as well as surrogate father to Corey Azure of San Diego, California; eighteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
